“Welcome to our webpage!”
The 2012-2013 school year opens on September 10 with some significant changes in the structure and function of the division formerly known as the Upper School (Grades 6-12). This year the Upper School will transition into separate schools for Middle School (Grades 6-8) and High School (Grades 9-12) students. The primary reason is to better service the unique needs of students in these grade levels. Mrs. Aimee Meditz will serve as Middle School Principal/Language, Learning, and Literacy (LLL) Department Head, and Dr. Robert Esenberg will serve as Deputy Director/High School Principal. Any questions about the two schools should be addressed to the respective Principal.
The overall goal of the CAS program for students in Grades 6-12 remains the same: to prepare every student for success in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) in Grades 11 and 12 as a gateway to the best universities in the world. Students who successfully matriculate through this rigorous and demanding program and earn the IB Diploma are fully prepared for success in college. Our diploma students have been, and continue to be, accepted in some of the best schools around the world, including the United States and the United Kingdom. Any questions specific to the IBDP should be addressed to our IB Coordinator, Mrs. Arnelle Grundhoefer. Any questions specific to college guidance and assistance, including how to prepare for and when to take the SAT, should be addressed to our College Guidance Advisor, Mrs. Brenetta Esenberg.
Students in Grades 9 and 10 are specifically prepared for success in the IBDP. In Grade 10, our pre-IBDP year, students have course options that help them determine what courses they wish to take in the IBDP. In addition, they must complete the Project Sophomore requirement, designed to prepare them for similar projects in Grades 11 and 12. At the end of Grade 10, with the assistance of the IB Coordinator and the College Guidance Advisor and recommendations from classroom teachers, students select their IBDP courses. Grade 9 students may also participate in the new High School Reading Program.
During the three years spent attending the Middle School, our students are prepared for high school and the rigors of a demanding program and a 90-minute block. In Grade 6, students enter a transition year in which they are team taught by two teachers. In Grades 7 and 8, they fully participate in the program and schedule to prepare them for the IBDP. The Middle School program includes several supplemental services to enhance their opportunities for success. This includes the new Middle School Reading Program as well as the Saturday Recovery Program (for students in Grades 6-12).
Our 6-12 extracurricular programs are vast and are ever-expanding. Under the guidance of the High School Athletic Director, Mr. Ghandi Najmeddine, and the Middle School Athletic Director, Mr. John Greer, CAS offers numerous opportunities for male and female students to participate in interscholastic and intramural sports. Tournaments hosted outside of Morocco are common. Teacher sponsors also provide academically oriented extracurricular activities–such as the Model United Nations program, Middle School Student Council, High School Student Council, theater, music, and drama—after school during each trimester. An interscholastic Debate Club and participation in an interscholastic Business competition are being planned for this year. Mrs. Melissa Woodruff coordinates the after-school activities for students in Grades 6-12.
Both Middle School and High School students attend regular assemblies on alternating Wednesdays during the school year. These provide a sense of community and unity among the students and offer leadership and performance opportunities as well. The High School assemblies are coordinated by the Student Council and their advisors, Mr. Paul Beekmeyer and Mr. Conor McNerney. In addition, all students attend a 25-minute Learning Block/Study Hall each day. Grouped into sections of less than 10 students under the direction of an Advisor, students may seek extra help from their classroom teachers or use the time to read or study.
In order to get off to a good start, the following list of supplies is included on this page. Having them on the first day of class will ensure that we maximize the time spent in class this year. Students need to be prepared and remember that every new day is the first day for the rest of their lives. Time spent wisely in class and in school is time wisely invested in their future success.
